What Are Your Favorite Video Games Ever?

Most of us who were born in late 80’s, early 90’s have experienced at least once in our life the thrill and joy of playing a video game. And sometimes, the game got stuck onto us, still going on trying to beat that level we so miserably failed countless times. Even more so, certain top video games achieved the unique feature of becoming franchises, due to their well written back-stories and stunning visual innovations. So it comes as no surprise why so much youth goes beyond, and enters this multi-billion dollar industry as game designers and writers.

Yet, some of the games which we ended loving the most did not require exquisite graphics but instead focus heavily on interestingly developed plots and storylines. Now let’s take a trip down on memory lane, and remind ourselves of just a few of the most iconic video game franchises.

 Top 5 Video Games

The top is made of 5 most notable video game franchises. These top video games were classified based on quality, innovations, storylines and sales. Some might have initial titles reaching early back in the 80’s, so for this list we overlooked usual conundrums such as “how good is the graphic engine”?

So let’s get this bandwagon going and get down to our countdown.

Legend of Zelda

Debuting in 1985, Legend of Zelda is a fantasy high-action adventure video game series created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka.

Developed and published by Nintendo, it became one of its most prominent and popular franchises. Some of its portable installments later on were outsourced to Capcom, Vanpool and Grezzo.

So much has Zelda grew in popularity that nowadays it’s hard not to find a game console which is not offering package deals, with at least one Zelda title.

One interestingly loving fun-fact revolves around the common misconception that Zelda was the name of the main character, instead of Link. Zelda being the princess which quite often required Link’s benevolent aid in rescuing her. I guess one could say this reminds of another peachy cult-classic.

The video game introduced an innovative feature of being able to save the game on consoles, which later on became a standard in the industry. As of 2011, the franchise series has sold over 67 million copies, earning a well-deserved spot in our top.

Call of Duty

One of the most famous first-person top video games franchises, the series Call of Duty began on PC’s, but later on expanded to consoles and handhelds.

The initial trilogy was set during WW II, allowing players to experience the events from the Red Army and United States Army to the French Resistance.

Beginning with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the focus is shifted away from WW II in a more modern setting. Other sequels such as Modern Warfare 3 placed the setting a near-future world, expanding the tactics system of the gameplay.

Even though initially developed and owned by Infinity Ward, which still remains as the main developer, the franchise in now owned and published by Activision.

Many argue that the series started lacking actual substance in the form of well written storylines and becomes somewhat repetitive. Nevertheless,  no one can argue their smashing sales figures.

As of April 2015, the Call of Duty series sold over 175 million copies and according to Activision its sales reached the staggering sum of $10 billion.

One of world’s best known media franchises, created by Satoshi Tajiri, Pokemon saw its debut in 1995.

Although the franchise began as a pair of video games for the original Game Boy, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, now it spans over video games, trading card games, animated television shows, movies and toys.

Cumulative sales of these top video games have reached more than 245 million copies. As of 2013, the brand grossed a mind blowing $40 billion and in 2014 alone it earned $2 billion.

Pokemon or “Pocket Monsters” as it is known in the original Japanese title, managed to gain a special place in popular culture, single-handedly reviving the Game Boy in the 90’s. With over 60 games in the series and spawning a whopping 800 episodes in the animated show, Pokemon shows no sign of stopping.

The open world franchise made its debut in 1997. Ever since its release it spawned much controversy on the gameplay options always instantaneously rating M for mature content.

Revolving around an urban setting, Grand Theft Auto didn’t invent the open sandbox gameplay, but revolutionized it with its in-depth choices. From the ground-breaking GTA 3, every new release added new features creating a very real virtual environment.

Coming from a 2D background, it has been one of the fastest growing franchises ever, counting 185 million copies sold, with 32 million alone sold by GTA 5.

Allowing players to release their frustrations and partake in some dubious nature decisions created a lot of controversy upon exposing mature content onto young children.

Developed by Rockstar, the game allowed players to explore vast open worlds, command a large array of vehicles and customize almost every aspect of the playable characters.  As such, Grand Theft Auto is a must on our top video games franchises.

What could I say about Mario that hasn’t been already said? Making its debut in 1982, Mario revitalized the gaming industry in the 80’s, highly improved 3D platforming with every release considered a timeless classic.

It spawned 4 sports series, 2 RPG series, a partying mini-game franchise, 2 puzzle franchises and a kart racing franchise totaling an astounding 486 million copies sold. No other gaming franchise even comes close

It became such a pop culture icon, that it was even turned into a live action movie, which so many of us still try to forget, the 1993 Super Mario Bros.

With its staggering worldwide success, it is no wonder that it reigns supreme as Nintendo’s number 1 video game franchise.

Hope you enjoyed our post on top 5 video games. All have been so ahead of their time that nostalgia stuck. Hope you enjoyed both the article and the games. Have fun smashing those buttons!
