What Happens When You Stop Drinking Alcohol?

Whenever it is that you do decide to have your last drink, it’s not going to be an easy ride from here on. Make no mistake; you will feel the physical effects when you first quit drinking after many years of alcohol abuse. The degree of severity depends on how long you were an alcoholic and the frequency at which you downed alcohol; your body’s physical reaction will vary. For some, quitting drinking can result in a dangerous withdrawal from alcohol. In order to deal with this in the proper way, seek professional help. Some of the symptoms of withdrawal are deadly and can lead to seizures or even death if not attended to properly.

Some symptoms include confusion and hallucinations, tremor of the hands, fever, convulsions, black outs. In most cases, the symptoms will be less severe and you won’t need medical attention. However, you may still experience some unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. These may include anxiety, jumpy or nervous feelings, a “shaky” feeling, depression, fatigue, insomnia, nausea and vomiting, headache, sweating, clammy skin, eyelid twitching, heart palpitations.

These are just the physical manifestations. There are a few psychological symptoms that can occur too. Relapses are bound to occur as you’ll constantly be craving alcohol. Overcoming chronic alcoholism is extremely difficult. If in case you have been unsuccessful in the past, this time you’ll have to will yourself to survive the ordeal.

Generally, recovering alcoholics undertake the following steps-

1. Attending AA or NA.

2. Signing up for rehab.

3. Scheduling regular visits with therapists and counselors.

4. Building a network of friends in recovery to support your efforts.

There will be many things that will prompt you to give up on alcohol. Just remember these reasons while you’re actually going through the whole recovery process. The deterrents are endless but ultimately you stand to gain if you come out the other side.
