10 Health Facts About Parsley, the Unsung Hero of Natural Health

Most people know the herb parsley as a cooking ingredient, adding some light flavor and texture to meals.  It is no secret that parsley is healthy, but many are unaware that this herb from the Mediterranean area is a great way to combat various serious health issues.  It is one of the most powerful natural health boosters around today.  The following are ten amazing ways in which parsley has helped keep humans in good health for over a millenium.

Extremely Nutritious

Contained within parsley is a wealth of nutrition.  Luteolin, for example, increases metabolic activity and may possibly aid in pain management.  Apiin, crisoeriol, and apigenin are other notable nutrients found in parsley; these are all anti-oxidants with specific benefits.

Greater Immunity

One of the most important benefits of parsley is that it provides enhancement to one’s immune system.  It is a solid way to prevent the onset of allergies, colds, infections, and more.

Destroying Bacteria

Parsley is one of many herbs that is extremely abundant in chlorophyll.  Commonly known as an agent of photosynthesis in plants, chlorophyll actually also acts as a method to combat unhealthy bacteria in the body.  This goes hand-in-hand with other parsley health benefits such as the immune system booster, further fending off sickness and infection.

Cardiac Health

Parsley is known to lower the overall risk of heart attacks, strokes, and various other heart-related issues.  This is because the folacin found in parsley regulates the buildup of an amino acid called homocysteine.  This amino acid is important to the body, but like anything else, in large doses it becomes toxic.

Relief from Pain and Swelling

Parsley benefits the body by acting as an overall reducer of swelling and inflammation everywhere.  It specifically can be used to dull pain of bone-related conditions like arthritis and potentially carpal tunnel.  The ingredient that does this, called eugenol, is commonly found in medical antiseptics and anaesthetics as well.

Fight Cancer

The antioxidant mentioned previously, apigenin, is a known pre-emptive combatant against various forms of cancer.  While it cannot treat cancer after it has already developed, it can slow it, and if consumed regularly, parsley can prevent it altogether.

Helping Other Conditions

Aside from fighting cancer and relieving symptoms of arthritis, one of the best benefits of parsley is its ability to ward off diseases and health conditions in general.  Notably among these are diabetes and asthma.

Cleansing the System

The liver is the organ that detoxifies the body, extracting and expelling any dangerous substances.  Myristicin and the antioxidant apigenin enhance the function of the liver.  For this reason, parsley is a highly recommended aid in treatment for colon cancer and may prevent liver damage from excessive consumption of alcohol.

Healthy Blood Vessels

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is another element of parsley that fights off homocysteine toxicity.  Aside from general heart health, this helps keep blood vessels healthy and well-functioning.  Clean and consistent delivery of blood to the heart is important for preventing cardiac arrest.

Aid for UTIs

Parsley can take the place of other antibiotics as a method to combat urinary tract infections.  It is not a proven cure-all by any means, but many doctors recommend it, and it may be a good preventative measure if you are worried about a UTI.

Adverse Effects

Of course, everything should be taken in moderation; too much parsley can cause problems that are as significant as the issues it addresses in the first place.  Toxicity can also occur due to taking too much of another supplement or getting too much of a certain vitamin in combination with consuming parsley.  It takes quite a bit of any one substance to reach toxic levels, but it is important nonetheless to know the dangers.

Kidney Concerns

Sometimes, overconsumption of parsley may cause the kidney to underperform of suffer serious damage.  If caught early enough, some time and detox can remedy the problem.  If you feel any discomfort or pain around the area of your kidneys, be sure to consult a doctor.

Off-balance

A displaced center of gravity or general deterioration in equilibrium may occur.  If you feel dizzy, have trouble walking straight, or get the sensation that the room is spinning, you could be severely lacking balance.  Avoid dimly lit areas and seek medical attention.

Seizures

This is one of the more dangerous side effects, as anyone who has not experienced a seizure or cared for someone who has had a seizure may not be of much use in the event that one suddenly happens.  Call 911 immediately if you begin experiencing even brief convulsions.

Strong Headaches

Even in light amounts, parsley is known to cause headaches.  The body usually becomes comfortable with parsley after a while and the headaches dissipate.  However, when toxicity occurs, the headaches may return at a greatly increased level of severity.  They will cease almost immediately upon stopping regular ingestion of parsley.
