Quick, what’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of a Big Mac from McDonald’s?

You definitely have a few choices.

For instance, two all-beef patties. Or special big mac sauce. Maybe lettuce. Or cheese. How about pickles and onions? And quite possibly, you thought of a sesame seed bun.

While most of those ingredients from the famous Big Mac jingle are pretty straightforward, the unique “special sauce” the fast food chain slathers over its signature burgers has been a closely guarded mystery for years – kind of like the top-secret files at the CIA, but without the armed guards. Although, it’s probably safe to assume there were pretty strict security protocols in place (the Hamburglar can’t be trusted).

In the Past

However, over the past several years, McDonald’s has changed its tune regarding the secrecy of the Big Mac sauce. In fact, the chain even sold a limited number of Big Mac sauce bottles in Australia back in 2016. A year later, the restaurant gave away 10,000 bottles at select locations in the United States.

By releasing the sauce to the public, they require the restaurant to list the ingredients on the bottle. Those ingredients are also posted on the company’s website. This solved half of the mystery.

The question remains, what’s the right combination of those ingredients to make your very own homemade Big Mac sauce? We did the research and found the answer.

The Big Mac Sauce Ingredients

In what should come as no surprise, the majority of the ingredients in the Big Mac sauce include a wide variety of preservatives and artificial flavoring that you probably don’t have at home. If you have Propylene Glycol Alginate sitting in your pantry, then we stand corrected.

But there are simple substitutions you can make to the recipe using common ingredients in your kitchen to create a Big Mac sauce replica that’s very similar to the original. In fact, McDonald’s Canada even uploaded a video on its YouTube page showing how to do it.

Internet bloggers took it a step further to post copycat recipes that are slightly different than the McDonald’s video demonstration but include the quantity of each ingredient that you’ll be using.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own homemade Big Mac sauce:

  • ½ cup of mayonnaise
  • 4 teaspoons of sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of French dressing
  • 1 tablespoon of finely minced white onion
  • 1 teaspoon of white vinegar
  • ⅛ teaspoon of salt

Creating Your Own Big Mac Sauce at Home

Now that you know the necessary ingredients, the next step is easy – simply dump them all into a bowl and mix until blended all the ingredients throughout.

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or move the sauce into an air-tight container and refrigerate overnight. The sauce will have thickened, so when you take it out of the refrigerator, be sure to stir with a spin. At this point, you have your very own homemade Big Mac sauce.

Test Your Sauce

Be sure to test your sauce before using it on a burger. You may need to make a few minor condiment adjustments if it doesn’t suit your taste. Feel free to sprinkle some extra salt, pepper, sugar, or even paprika, garlic powder, or onion powder into your mixture to add to the flavor. Just remember, add these extra spices in small amounts. It’s easy to add more, but very difficult to remove if you add too much.

It’s also worth noting that it’s not absolutely necessary to refrigerate the sauce overnight. If you’re craving a Big Mac right now, you can use the sauce right after mixing it, but the consistency might be a little thinner than the real thing. Just make sure you put the leftover sauce in the refrigerator after to keep it from spoiling.
