Before we jump into learning how to open a can without a can opener we must give a quick safety warning. Some of these methods require a lot of care to avoid injury. 1. Use a Rock or Concrete

When you read that headline you probably imagined throwing a large rock at your unopened can, watching it explode, and then collecting the food that was spilled. While that might work for getting the can open it’s not exactly practical. There is a more effective way to use a large rock or patch of concrete to open a can.

What you want to do is create friction on the lid of the can to loosen the seam where the lid meets the body of the can. Find a large rock with a nice surface area or use a patch of concrete like a sidewalk. With the lid pressed against the concrete, vigorously slide the can back and forth until you begin to see some moisture from the can begin to escape.

Once the lid has been loosened you can use a small knife or another tool to pry open the lid. Take care not to cut yourself on the lid while opening. This sounds like a difficult method for opening a can but it is probably one of the quickest methods of opening a can without a can opener.

2. Use a Pocket Knife or Chisel

For this method, you can make use of a number of tools you may have with you. A pocket knife or a chisel will work best but you may also be able to use a screwdriver if needed. Before you begin opening the can you will need to find a nice, sturdy flat surface. The can needs to be stable for this method to work.

Once the can is stable with the lid facing upwards, you can begin. Place your pocket knife or chisel on the inside seam of the lid. Using your hand, tap the handle of your tool until it breaks through the seam and leaves a hole in the lid. Pull out your knife and then move it slightly to the side of the hole you just created. Repeat this process all the way around the can until the lid is loose and able to be opened.

3. Cut Open with a Chef’s Knife

If you have a sharp chef’s knife in your kitchen then you may have the perfect tool for opening a can. The blade of a chef’s knife is perfectly shaped to help you open a can in a pinch. Just like with the pocket knife method above, please practice caution when opening a can with a chef’s knife.

Grip the knife and place the butt end of the blade into the inner seam of the can’s lid. This part of the knife blade is wider than the tip. Ensure the can is steady and then begin to apply pressure on the knife until the blade punctures through the lid. Slide the blade over slightly and repeat this process around the can.

4. Grab a Spoon for Opening

You probably didn’t think a spoon would be mentioned in a list of methods for how to open a can without a can opener. Spoons can be very handy in a pinch. There is less risk to cutting yourself when using a spoon compared to using a knife.

Hold the spoon on the inside lip of the can with the spoon facing inward. Now, rub the tip of the spoon against the area quickly. The pressure and friction will cause the spoon to puncture the lid. Repeat this process around the lid of the can.

5. Use Your Hands to Pop the Lid

You may want to throw on a pair of gloves for this method. Have some shoot a video on their phone. You do this because no one will believe the story when you tell it.

It is possible to pop the lid off of a can with your own hands. Simply use both hands to squeeze the sides of the can about an inch below the lid. You may have to rotate the can and squeeze several times. With enough pressure, the lid of the can should pop right off. Pour out your food and enjoy your new superhero strength.
