Your nighttime self is the one you should rely on. After all, it’s he or she who wants to get up early in the morning. Your morning self certainly wants nothing to do with that.

According to Fast Company, changing your nighttime ritual is paramount to being able to waltz right out of bed in the morrow. Setting your alarm clock is certainly part of that ritual.

Instead of setting your alarm right next to you, put it all the way across the room. That way, you’ll have to get out of bed to turn it off. And when you’re already standing up, it makes actually waking up that much easier.

Take this a step further and hide your alarm clock before you go to bed. You won’t find it stumbling around in the dark. You’ll have to turn the lights on, and once you do, you’ll be much less likely to go back to sleep.

You can even take it further than that and get yourself a Clocky Alarm Clock, which actually runs away from you on wheels before you can turn it off.

According to the Sleep Foundation, Alcohol has an adverse effect on the quality of sleep you get. While it may make you fall asleep faster, you won’t actually be more rested.

Caffeine serves only to stimulate you. When you stay up all night, you won’t go to bed early. Say no to that espresso after dinner, or that last cuppa joe before leaving work — your brain will thank you. And your morning self will have no excuse not to leap out of bed.

Consuming large amounts of food right before bed is bad for you. All that energy will keep you awake more than help you fall asleep, and your body isn’t designed to take in calories and simply rest.

That being said, many people find eating before bed comforting and even necessary. Eating a small and healthy snack before bed is not clinically proven to have adverse effects on your health.

It can actually aid you in being well-rested and ready to get up early tomorrow. However, it’s especially important that you choose foods that contain tryptophan, melatonin and other substances proven to help you sleep:

  • Almonds and walnuts
  • Turkey meat
  • Chamomile or passionflower tea
  • Kiwi

You really, really need to stop watching Netflix before bed. The Sleep Foundation warns against unnatural light before bed, especially that which comes from phones, televisions and computers.

They give the brain a bit too much stimulation, blocking REM sleep from coming on. Instead, try reading before bed. Turn the light off a few minutes before bedtime and fall into a peaceful slumber. In the morning, you’ll wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day.

Exercise is another way to make yourself enter into REM more quickly. It has been shown to have positive effects on sleep cycle, metabolism and healthy mindset as well.
