Scar Removal: 11 Home-Made Solutions

Scar Removal: 11 Home-Made Solutions

Anything that causes damage to the skin can cause scarring: burns, inflammation, severe acne, and of course, deep cuts.  Up until relatively recently scars were largely considered permanent.  Methods have been developed to treat scars, though most are unreasonably costly, inefficient, or simply take too much time.  Many little-known home remedies for scars exist; what follows is a list of 11 of the best natural scar treatment methods.

Baking Soda Solution

With no pun intended, this acts as a topical solution to scar removal.  Simply combine baking soda and water at a 5:1 ratio to create a pasty mixture.  Apply this mixture to the scar you wish to remove, then wash it off with warm water after it has dried.

Hiding Scars in the Mean Time

While any of the solutions on this list are working to remove the scar, Rose Hip Seed oil can be used to hide the scar.  Remember to store the oil in a cool, dark place.  To use the oil, rub a small amount onto the scarred area.  This could be used after the baking soda solution to temporarily hide a healing scar.

Extra Vitamin E

Another possible topical treatment, if you can purchase Vitamin E supplements you may wish to try rubbing the oil inside on a scar.  This will topically heal AND hide the scar.  Consuming foods or supplements to get Vitamin E can also help naturally heal the scar.  Try consuming peanut butter, various kinds of nuts (almonds and hazelnuts in particular), cooked spinach, and steamed broccoli.

Aloe Vera Gel

Of course, the popular all-encompassing topical healing gel used to treat burns, itches, and irritation can also be used to heal scars.  This has both a quick hiding property and a permanent healing property.  It works by moisturizing the skin and making it more elastic.

Get a Massage

Some scars can be healed simply by kneading the damaged skin.  This causes the scar tissue to break up, allowing it to be replaced with healthy skin.  It is best to seek a professional masseuse for this.

Oil of Lavender

Another topical healing oil, this is simply rubbed onto the scarred skin.  This oil will also improve the general condition and health of skin.  It is effective against all scars, regardless of their cause.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

While normally used for cooking, this oil can be utilized for a very simple purpose: unclogging pores and extracting deceased cells in the epidermis.  The oil should be left on for an extended period of time, so ideally it should be applied before bed (unless you are a restless sleeper).  Olive oil also softens skin.

Lotion from Mustard Seeds

The oil made from mustard seeds can be used in lotions, creams, or ointments as a natural scar treatment.  It is extremely potent, and only about a tenth of most solutions is made up of mustard seed oil.

Lemon Juice

Surprising to many, lemon juice actually contains healing properties for damaged tissue.  This is due to the citric acid found in lemons, so theoretically any citrus fruit would work.  Lemons are, however, the most potent.  Simply clean the part of the skin that is scarred, then swab the skin with a juice-soaked cotton ball.  Let it sit for ten minutes.

Cocoa Butter

This method is generally less preferred since cocoa butter is more expensive and not typically found in the average home.  It is one of the best methods nonetheless.  Similar to how aloe vera heals scars, this will add moisture to the area it is applied to as well as greatly smooth the damaged skin.

General Care

Finally, though it may seem obvious, one of the best ways to prevent a scar from forming or worsening is by leaving it alone.  Don’t allow the area to be burned, cut, or otherwise marred any further.  Take great care not to tear any scabs.  If possible and desired, consult your surgeon about an injection of triamcinolone to avoid scarring as much as possible.  This of course is not an option in cases where there is no surgery (burns and accidental cuts, for example).
