Short haircuts for women of every age group – 2014 guide

Short haircuts for women have been historically associated with a lack of femininity or with a neglectful, shaggy, boyish approach to self-grooming. Well, thankfully, this is no longer the case and now the world has grown more accustomed to women with short hair. While long hair seems to be the basic option for nearly every traditional look, shorter styles are now viewed as stylish and modern, and this new approach couldn’t be more right. If you feel tempted to try out a cool short cut yourself, then, first of all, congratulations for the decision! We know it may take a bit of courage at first to let go of the long hair, but you’ll be more than pleased with the results once you make the big step. Perhaps attempt it in the summer at first and see how it goes.

The short haircuts for women are so popular because they make you look young, delicate and feminine (since most short styles offer a direct view to your neck and collarbone) and there are lots of great things you can do with them too! You can use hair accessories, you can weave little braids, name it – such improvisations aren’t suitable exclusively to longer hair, you’ll see. While it’s true that length can give you some maneuver space to work with, long hair also has the annoying tendency of being heavy, therefore giving in to weight after a few hours, and to require tons of spray for a hair-do to hold even for that short while. Short haircuts, on the other hand, don’t really have this disadvantage, not to mention that picking the right one can be incredibly flattering. Also, it should be worth mentioning that short hair is much easier to do and maintain than longer one.

In this guide, we will present you a selection of nice short haircuts for women of every age group that have been in the top especially during the past two years (2013 and 2014), so don’t worry about whether the look we’re presenting is outdated or not; trust us, it’s as new as they get. Each suggestion will be accompanied by pictures and some style advice, as well as maybe some physiognomy data of the type of woman which would most benefit from the haircut in question.

Without further ado, here are some of the best short haircuts for women of all demographics, with images to view and choose from.

Short haircuts for women around 20

This is an age of great creativity and courage to wear even the craziest trendy styles. If there’s such thing as an age for everything, then we can definitely say that short haircuts for women were created for 20-something girls. It’s too bad that there aren’t more of them willing to experiment with their hair more often. Our main pick for this age group is the blonde pixie cut; nothing says edgy as well as a pixie cut. As a bonus, it’s super easy to transform this look for a party by frizzing it with a bit of gel to make it spiky and punk (or even Mohawk if you’re feeling brave). Blonde is the trendy pick right now for the pixie cut, and we think the whole look is very cute especially on women with round faces.

Short haircuts for women around 30

For women around 30, the time has perhaps come to settle into a bit more length and we can think of nothing better than the short hair with side swept bangs. The fact that it’s asymmetrical makes it a very pretty and sophisticated hairstyle, while still being young and really casual. It’s basically the improved version of a medium bob, and it started being hot since 2012 and keeps rocking on. We’d see this beautifully complimenting Asian women, and women of other ancestries with an oval shaped face. Unfortunately, it’s a style that wouldn’t work well with curly hair, but it’s a great choice for straight and even thin hair.

Short haircuts for women around 40

For women in their forties, we recommend two looks: the first one is the parted wavy bob if they’re looking for a natural-looking style with almost medium hair (see the picture above). The great thing about this one is that ever since 2010 when it first entered the hairstyle trends, it’s ben back every year and kept complimenting every type of woman, including plus size (we don’t like the word fat). It’s also great for fine or colored hair. Its layered texture gives volume even to gradually thinning hair (older women will know what we’re talking about), and as you can notice from the picture, it works great with glasses too.

Our second suggestion, for those who’d like an shorter version but still suitable to mature women, is the short haircut with highlights (see above). It’s still classy, the highlights will give it a younger edge, and it works well with even black hair as a starting base, or on African-American women.

Short haircuts for women around 50

When you’re fifty, you probably want a relaxed hairstyle that doesn’t necessarily scream sassy right away. Our pick for this group is the short choppy hairstyle, perfect for any kind of occasion and dressing style and with very little maintenance required. Even the trendiest wigs are all about imitating this style, but it’s still relaxed enough to be perfect for slightly older women. It’s not an “old” hairstyle, since as you can notice it has a young air about it. It’s great for thick hair, but you can just as well wear it with slightly tapered hair if yours isn’t naturally thick enough. It’s flattering for slightly overweight women a well.

Short haircuts for women around 60 and 70

Around this age, the gray color of your hair can be quite cool if you choose a nice and flattering haircut. Our suggestion is a slightly long pixie haircut, which you can admire in the picture above. It goes well with any face shape and it won’t require much tending to.

As a disclaimer to the way we’re grouping these pics and suggestions up in age-related clusters, we should start by saying that age is just really a number. There’s no valid rule that says that women’s haircuts should be age-appropriate or any cliché like that. It doesn’t matter that you may have a few more years on board than your haircut suggests, we believe that there’s no such thing as old and every woman should be entitled to wear whatever style she fancies. Still, there are some styles which seem to be more popular within a certain age group, which is why we have chosen to present the information like that.
