The Russian Blue cat is a completely-natural breed; meaning that nature created the breed without any interference from humans. It’s nicknamed the “Archangel cat,” though the formal name is based on the cat’s gray-blue coat and silvery-shine. They are characterized by this color, almond-shaped green eyes, and regal appearance.

How Big Do They Get and What Do They Look Like?

Purebred Russian Blue cats range from around 8-12 pounds when they are full-grown. They are considered a medium-sized cat breed, with a relatively-lean face and body. The Russian Blue cat tends to have a smooth, medium-wedged head, with a short (or blunt) muzzle. They have larger ears that widen at the base, and wide-set, very-vivid eyes. Their necks are slender, their bones are fine, and their fur is incredibly plush.

What Color Are They?

As you read above, the Russian Blue cat’s name comes from its fur-color. Traditionally, the colors are quite uniform. As kittens, the breed tends to have yellow eyes; which change to green by the time they are adults. Kittens may also have grey-blue “stripes” that fade away. Russian Blue cat adults have uniform, silvery, blue-grey fur.

No one really knows where exactly these cats came from or why, but scientists believe their thick coats indicate an origin from colder-climate regions. What we do know is that the Russian Blue cat’s breed mostly developed in the areas of Scandinavia and Britain, in the late nineteenth century.
