What Is Moderation Management?

Moderation Management (MM) is considered to be an early intervention approach and reduces the ill-effects alcoholism can lead to over time. Moderation Management is referred to a support network based on behavioral change program for people who are worried about their drinking and want to make a change in their life. The goal of Moderation Management is to help people who think that their drinking habits could lead a chronic problem; rather than demanding total abstinence, provide support and treatment that focus on moderating the problem.

Going by the studies conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), there are 4 times more problem drinkers than full-blown alcoholics in the US.  That’s 4 times as many people whose lives are at-risk due to their risky drinking behavior, but who haven’t yet descended into full-blown alcoholism. The flip side of this coin is that there are actually very few programs in the United States, that are set up to deal with people who want to control the condition before it blows into a full-fledged alcoholism. This is in fact the best time to curb any future alcoholic abuse but sadly, there are very few centers that are willing to help people.

Whether they’re problem drinkers or alcoholics, many people avoid traditional treatment for very specific reasons.  More often than not, they are aware of the 12 step programs that make up 90% of treatment programs and will label them as an alcoholic. They will be forced to acknowledge their powerlessness over alcohol, and indulge in life-time abstinence from drinking. A 12 step program scared people away from seeking treatment. Many problem drinkers and full-blown alcoholics can benefit from a program that is less intensive and less demanding.

A Moderation Management program is a 9 step program that focuses on-

– Providing education and information about alcohol abuse.

– Offering guidelines and limits to moderating drinking behavior.

– Offering exercises to help problem drinkers become more actively aware of their drinking habits

– Setting goals.

– Managing your respective drinking so it doesn’t interfere with your lives.

Even though Moderation Management isn’t necessarily an alternative to the standardized 12 step programs, it can help you just as much as a 12 step program can. Only difference is that Moderation Management can help you curb your habit before it turns into an addiction. MM is focused on treating people at an earlier stage of alcohol abuse.  The philosophy behind MM is to help out problem drinkers before their habit spirals into full-on alcohol dependence, offering a much needed treatment path for people who aren’t right for the 12 step approach.
